How precision is replacing blanket discounts in hospitality promotion
Travel and tourism contributed $11.6 trillion to the global economy in 2025, growing nearly 50% faster than overall GDP. Hotel loyalty program membership across just five major chains now exceeds 676 million, with 12% compound annual growth since 2019.
Hospitality promotion methods are the specific tactics hotels, resorts, and travel platforms use to acquire, retain, and grow guest relationships through structured value exchanges. These range from tiered loyalty programs and paid memberships to dynamic pricing, gamification, and AI-powered personalization.
These are eight promotion methods shaping how the hospitality and tourism industry competes this year.
Tiered loyalty remains the industry's backbone, but the structure is changing. Hilton overhauled Honors in January 2026, lowering its Gold threshold to 25 nights (from 40) while adding a new Diamond Reserve tier. That top tier requires $18,000 in annual spending plus 80 nights or 40 stays. The move widened the base while creating an aspirational peak for the most valuable travelers.
Marriott Bonvoy continues to put up the largest loyalty revenue guidance numbers among major hotel groups. IHG's own investor disclosures show that loyalty members spend roughly 20% more and are 10 times more likely to book direct than non-members.
Wyndham Rewards Insider launched in October 2025 at $95 per year, making it the first major group-wide paid loyalty tier from a U.S. hotel company. Members get at least 10% off rates at 8,000+ properties. They also get automatic Gold status, 7,500 annual bonus points worth a free night, and double point earning. Up to 15% off international flights with American and United Airlines rounds out the package. The discounts stack on promotional rates.
TUI announced a loyalty scheme in May 2026. The Smiles Rewards Club will launch with three tiers, free membership, and Smiles points on TUI bookings, covering travel packages, flights, hotel stays, and experiences. IHG has offered its own paid tier for years through the InterContinental Ambassador program, giving members guaranteed room upgrades and late checkout at InterContinental properties.
For hotel brands, the core math question is whether membership delivers significantly more value than its annual fee for the average member.
Industry sources increasingly frame hotel loyalty as shifting beyond traditional points programs toward broader experience ecosystems built around everyday value, partnerships, and personalization.
World of Hyatt expanded into experiences through a partnership with Austin-based startup Way. Members who book designated "Find Experiences" earn five Base Points per eligible U.S. dollar spent. Several Hyatt properties are already generating millions in ancillary revenue through the program.
1 Hotels relaunched its Mission Membership by moving away from points entirely. New members receive a planted tree via the Arbor Day Foundation, and 1% of each member's spending goes to environmental nonprofits. The program positions the reward structure as a reflection of brand identity and environmental commitment.
The hotel equivalent of an exclusive, money-can't-buy reward could be a behind-the-scenes kitchen session with the executive chef, early access to a seasonal room renovation, or an advisory council where top-tier members shape future property experiences. These kinds of experiential tiers give frequent travelers a reason to stay loyal beyond the rate.
Hotel pricing is undergoing a fundamental shift from intuition-based models to data-driven revenue management. Booking windows are compressing, and shorter stays are growing as a share of total demand. That requires faster pricing responses than static seasonal rate cards can deliver.
The personalization layer extends beyond pricing. McKinsey estimates that hotels using basic AI analytics see a 2 to 5% uplift in net profit, while agentic AI could deliver 5 to 15%+.
More than half of hoteliers now plan to use AI and analytics for personalized marketing. Pricing and promotional offers work best when they move in the same rhythm. Teams can connect dynamic pricing with behavior-based targeting and tighter offer logic.
With average daily rates hitting a ceiling, hotels are turning to ancillary revenue. Wyndham reported ancillary revenues up 18% in Q3 2025 versus the prior year. Plusgrade, operating across 600 hotel partners, says upgrades are a major driver of ancillary revenue. Other top sellers include activities and transport such as airport transfers.
The underlying approach is to combine room rates with breakfast, spa credits, transfers, or activities into a single-price package. Guests perceive added value, and the hotel protects its base room rate instead of discounting it. Offer structures such as "Stay 3 Nights, Get the 4th Free" can increase length of stay without cutting the nightly rate.
40% of U.S. hotel bookings in June 2025 were made within seven days of arrival. Globally, the share of searches for one-night stays rose 9% from Q1 2023 to Q4 2025.
Travelers in this window are often willing to pay higher rates. Flash promotions do not need to be deep discounts. Urgency-framed offers at near-rack rates can capture this segment.
The sequencing matters. Unified guest data comes first. Then personalized flash offers can go to loyalty members who have not booked in 90 days, or to guests whose last stay was a specific property type. That level of targeting preserves rate integrity while filling rooms during shoulder periods.
Trainline shows what this kind of targeted execution looks like in practice. The platform serves millions of travelers across 40+ markets and uses Talon. One's Rule Engine to build advanced discount logic and run promotional campaigns independently, without engineering dependencies. Campaign managers create, test, and adjust offers across markets.
Phocuswright research from early 2026 found that 84% of leisure travelers admit to gaming loyalty programs. Brands designing explicit game mechanics are channeling a behavior that already exists.
Hotels and cruise lines are well positioned for this. A guest who consistently books spa treatments could receive a challenge to try a new dining outlet for bonus points. A weekend-only booker could get a midweek stay challenge. Cruise lines can run port-of-call exploration challenges. IHG One Rewards already uses Milestone Rewards at qualifying night thresholds, giving members a choice of perks each time they hit a new milestone. The structure rewards sustained engagement rather than one-time volume.
Direct bookings cost hotels roughly 4 to 5% of revenue to acquire versus OTA commissions topping 15%. A new distribution layer is accelerating the shift. Hotel discoverability and booking tools now extend into AI platforms. Phocuswright data shows a quarter to a third of travelers are already interested in booking through AI.
For hospitality marketers, this means promotional offers need to be structured for machine readability, not just human browsing. An AI agent evaluating hotel options for a traveler will not respond to a beautifully designed banner ad. It needs structured data about what the offer includes, who qualifies, and when it expires. The brands that build this structured layer into their loyalty and offer infrastructure now will be the ones AI platforms surface first.
Brands are using targeted offers, behavioral challenges, experiential rewards, and real-time pricing with more control and more relevance. Every shift depends on the same underlying capability: Understanding individual guest behavior and acting on it across channels without waiting for an engineering team to build the logic from scratch. According to Harvard Business Review and Talon. One, 60% of organizations saw improved customer loyalty from integrating promotions and loyalty.
That capability is what Talon. One provides. The platform unifies loyalty programs and promotions under one rules engine, letting marketing teams build and adjust campaigns without waiting on engineering cycles. Travel brands like Hostelworld, Trainline, and National Express run on Talon. One for exactly this reason: They need decisioning across booking channels, pricing tiers, and personalized offers that legacy systems cannot coordinate.
For teams looking to build a unified incentives strategy, Talon. One is how that profile turns from aspiration into daily operations.
